Artist Statement

I enjoy painting in two different mediums - acrylic and oil - and in two different styles: abstract and traditional impressionism.

“People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish... but that's only if it's done properly.”  - Bansky
My main artistic focus is abstracts in acrylic. My abstracts are highly layered and textured,  radiating energy and movement with vibrant colors; many evoke the surfaces of of urban walls, sometimes encompassing graffitti. In 2016, I mounted a solo show of these works, Urban Edge, at Gallery Underground. My abstracts have been accepted by jury into the prestigious Art League shows at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA and other juried shows, and have won awards. Two of my pieces, "Energie Violette I" and "Energie Violette II," were commissioned by the Crystal City Business Improvement District for their public art project, enlarged to 10 feet by 10 feet and installed Crystal City in Arlington, VA (shown below).

In my traditional oils, I use vibrant colors in my traditional landscapes of lavender and sunflower fields, and terra cotta hues for Tuscan and Provence houses.  There is a serene quality in these French and Italian scenes, which I strive to capture in my work. I always enjoy painting landscapes of gardens, flower markets, and anything involving the brilliant hues of flowers.
As a lifelong beach lover, in my seascapes, I also strive to create a serene mood through color. I use rich blues and turquoises for the water and pastels for boats and sails.  I love the beach and have visited the Caribbean, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the shores of Delaware and the coast of Maine many times.  No summer is complete for me without a visit to an oceanside, and I try to capture in my paintings the joy I feel in this setting. I have always found the energy of cities to be very exciting, and I have recently begun capturing that excitement in cityscapes, both day and night scenes.

Youth sports embodies action and drama, Norman Rockwellesque moments, and touching interaction not only between players, but between players and coaches.  Originally inspired to paint boys playing baseball while watching and photographing my son, I subsequently mounted a 2011 solo show inspired by both my son and daughter's pursuits in high school, including field hockey, lacrosse, cross country and track. My solo show inMOTION, celebrating arlington high school athletics was a collection of 20 paintings of various high school sports encompassing both genders. A portion of the proceeds were donated to Arlington high school athletic programs. This show has resulted in frequent youth sports commissions, which I find a real joy to paint.

My love of the beach and painting seascapes has developed into a line of jewelry, "SandiSea Designs." This is a collection of sea-inspired jewelry made with the many treasures I collect at the beach: sea glass, shells, stones and pottery shards which have washed up on the shore. I love making these one-of-a-kind pieces.
